Mathematical modeling of infectious diseases

Abstract

Many infectious diseases transmit through a contaminated environment.  In this talk, we will discuss the use of mathematical modeling and analysis in the study of infectious diseases of this kind such as E. coli and cholera. The talk consists of two parts. In the first part, we will give an introduction to infectious disease modeling and a brief overview of stochastic processes. In the second part, we will focus on important recent developments in the modeling and prediction of extinction and outbreak of E. coli infections, and in the quantification of a disease threshold for cholera.
