The Vandermonde determinant as a sum of powers of
linear forms

Abstract

The Vandermonde determinant appears in virtually all areas of mathematics.  I will describe some of these uses and discuss joint work in progress with Zach Teitler (Boise State) which writes this determinant as a sum of powers of linear functions, using (probably) as few linear functions as possible.  Most of this talk will be accessible to anyone who has learned linear algebra and basic group theory.
