Vanishing of symmetrized tensors

Starting from the vanishing of the determinant of a square matrix, we will come to the question of when symmetrized decomposable tensors are zero. This will naturally lead to some classical geometric objects like Grassmannians and flag varieties, and orbit closures within these.
