Given a classical modular form which is
also a Hecke eigenform, one can use the theory of Eichler
and Shimura to construct an elliptic curve so that the
L-functions of the curve and the modular form agree.
I will explain this construction and the difficulties one
encounters when considering a similar construction of
abelian surfaces from Siegel paramodular forms. I
will then outline a new research project which is aimed at
overcoming these difficulties.
