A relatively new method of storing food in the backcountry is to carry and use a bear resistant food canister (BRFC) to store food.

Bear resistant food container.
  •  In designated backcountry camping areas in Glacier National Park you would place a BRFC in the designated food hang area.  In Undesignated camping and climbing areas you would place a BRFC 100 feet away from the camping area.
  • Typical BRFCs are 9 inches in diameter and 12 inches high, and weigh about 2.5 pounds.
  • When packed carefully it is designed to hold approximately 6 days of food for one person.
  • BRFCs are also manufactured in larger sizes and made of unbreakable plastic or other materials.

  • BRFCs are usually available to borrow or rent at the Park backcountry permit office.

Because bears can be killed if they come into contact with human food sources and become problem bears
So that future backcountry users will not be bothered by bears searching for food

Please read each of the statements below and indicate how much you agree with or disagree with each.
(Please select one answer for each statement)
  Agree or Disagree?
It is easier to hang food in the backcountry than to use a BRFC.
The size of a BRFC is too small to hold my food for a backcountry trip.
Carrying a BRFC adds too much weight to my backpack.
I am concerned that there is no way to anchor a BRFC near campsites.
Food storage is more reliable with a BRFC, than hanging food.
Using a BRFC is more convenient that other methods of food storage.
BRFCs are too expensive to purchase.
BRFCs are a foolproof way of storing food in the backcountry.
There aren't any alternatives to purchasing (like renting) BRFCs in the area.
I could easily fit a BRFC in my backpack for a backcountry trip.
If a Park Ranger recommended the use of a BRFC I would be more likely to use one.
If BRFCs were made lighter I would use one.
If BRFCs were available in a variety of sizes they would be more convenient to use.
I would try using a BRFC if the park had more available to use.
