Please read the following information:
A relatively new method of storing food in the
backcountry is to carry and use a bear resistant food canister (BRFC)
to store food.
In designated backcountry camping areas
in Glacier National Park you would place a BRFC in the
designated food hang area. In Undesignated camping and
climbing areas you would place a BRFC 100 feet away from the
camping area.
Typical BRFCs are 9 inches in diameter
and 12 inches high, and weigh about 2.5 pounds.
When packed carefully it is designed to
hold approximately 6 days of food for one person.
BRFCs are also manufactured in larger
sizes and made of unbreakable plastic or other materials.
BRFCs are usually available to borrow or
rent at the Park backcountry permit office.
