Fall 2009

Short Description

This course offers an overview of the rise and fall of African slavery in the Americas from the 15th to 19th centuries. Through readings, discussion and films, we shall analyze how slavery became the predominant mode of production in the Americas until the late 19th century. Emphasis in this course is placed on the trans-Atlantic slave trade, slave resistance and the hundred-year international struggle (1770s-1888) for abolition.
