Matthew
Benke
was selected as the NIATT's 2007 Student-of-the-Year for his
excellence in research, academic performance, professionalism and
leadership.
While pursuing his MS in Computer Science at the
University of Idaho, Matthew Benke worked with graduate and
undergraduate students in computer science, electrical and
computer and civil engineering conducting a
survivability assessment for the Moscow, Idaho,
Intelligent Transportation System.
Along with other researchers in NIATT, Matt conducted
interviews with various stakeholders responsible for the
various power, communications, and control devices
incorporated into the Moscow ITS. He gathered information
describing the layouts of these interconnected networks and
performed qualitative and quantitative analyses of this
information, identifying components critical to the
successful performance of the Moscow ITS. His MS thesis also
describes how similar analyses can be performed for other
transportation systems.
During his tenure working for NIATT, Benke co-authored
six refereed publications, including "Case Study of a
Survivability Analysis of a Small Intelligent Transportation
System,” co-authored with Drs. Ahmed Abdel-Rahim, Paul Oman,
and Brian Johnson (Transportation Research Record
#1944).Matt was also briefly involved in NIATT’s Future
Truck program when he helped develop an on-board graphical
telemetry interface.
At UI’s Center for Secure and Dependable Systems, Benke
worked on the formal modeling of secure communications
networks based on the Multiple Independent Levels of
Security architecture, a layered approach to trusted
software design.
Matt received the University of Idaho Alumni Award for
Excellence in 2003, as well as being named one of two
outstanding seniors in mathematics.
Matt currently lives in Linthicum Heights, Maryland, and works for
the Department of Defense conducting vulnerability analyses
for embedded operating systems.
Matt will be honored at the annual Council of University
Transportation Centers banquet on January 21, 2007, in Washington, DC,
along with outstanding students from other University Transportation
Centers. He received a cash award and an all-expenses paid trip to the
Transportation Research Board 86th Annual Meeting in DC.
Degrees Received:
2005 M.S. Computer Science
2003 B.S. Computer Science
