KLK356: Thorncreek Road to Moscow, Idaho, Wind Study

ITD Key No. 9294

Principal Investigators:

Donald Blackketter and Russell Qualls

Project Objectives:

This project is to determine if concerns regarding wind movement up and down the proposed cut and fill slopes of new Highway 95 between Thorncreek Road and Moscow are significant enough to warrant additional study and/or mitigation.

Tasks:

1. Perform a general search of the literature, including state highway departments and the technical literature to determine if other states and locations have performed studies of similar conditions. This search included the review of available information from other state DOT's highway design manuals or books and journal articles.

2. Conduct wind speed calculations of typical fill sections based on a variety of wind speeds on a general vehicle shape to determine the general wind flow. The shape we chose approximated that of a semi-truck.

Budget Information:

Total cost of the project was $5,600.
