PRESENT DAY ALBUQUERQUE

 

1950 Population surpasses 96,000 (up 173.1% from 1940).

1951 Sandia Corporation employs 3,800 people.

1957 Old Town is declared the first Historic Zone in Albuquerque.

1958 Albuquerque wins “All America City” award.

1960 Population surpasses 201,000 (up 107.8% from 1950).
Albuquerque has more PhD's per capita than any other city in the nation.

1961 Sandia Corporation employs 7,800 citizens.

1966 Albuquerque portion of Pan American Highway (running North to South) is finished.

1969 Alvarado Hotel (main railroad hotel in 1880s) demolished.

1970 Population surpasses 244,000.

1971 Albuquerque International Airport established on October 1st.

1972 Albuquerque has the highest crime rate per capita in the nation.

1979 Albuquerque is home to half of New Mexico’s population.

1980 Kirtland AFB employs 15,000 military and civilian personnel

1990 City area:  137.48 square miles

2000  #1 exporter of High Tech Products, #2 in percentage of scientists and engineers, #4 in industry research & development, #10 in private sector High-Tech job growth
