The various forms of high-style architecture
found in Korea include the column-head bracketed Chusimp'o and
inter-columnar bracketed Tap'o wood architecture, as well as the widely
varied forms of stone pagodas.
While the high-style architecture in Korea
includes the royal palaces, Buddhist temples, and Confucian academies,
this website is only going to focus on Royal Palaces and Buddhist
Temples. This isn't meant to be an exhaustive analysis of Korean
architecture, and I just don't have the proper resources to include them.
The palaces and Buddhist Temples bring
together all the elements of the architecture to express the ideas they
represent. The palace complexes reflect the opulence and grandeur of
the royalty, while the Buddhist Temples represent the act of ascending to
oneness with the universe through the use of layered stairs or bridges and
multi-tiered complexes.
