Information for advisees of Dr. Brauns

In some cases, I have paraphrased rather than providing the verbatim language as it appears in the UI handbook.

Repeating courses

  • A student who has received a D or F in a course at UI may repeat the course at the UI provided credit has not been earned in a more advanced vertically related course in the same subject area. Although all grades remain on the transcript, the first repeat will replace the grade and credit earned initially in the course and the first grade (D or F) will not be counted in the student's GPA. The second and subsequent repeats of the same course will be averaged in the student's institutional GPA. There will be an E code next to the course on the transcript indicating that the system has Excluded the grade from the GPA. Repeats are calculated into the student's GPA when the newest grade is earned.

If the student's second grade is lower than the first grade (i.e. D the first time and a F the second time), then not only will their GPA go down, but they will also lose the credit earned for the course with the D grade. Remember that a D is considered passing and therefore students do earn the credit, even though the grade may not be satisfactory for their degree requirements.

If a student must repeat a course more than once, all attempts after the first are included in the GPA calculation; the grades are Averaged together. However, credit is only earned once.

Withdrawal policies and procedures

  • Undergraduate students are allowed to withdraw from a maximum of 20 credits during their entire undergraduate career. Courses that are dropped before the drop deadline are not counted as withdrawals; only those courses dropped during the withdrawal period and graded as a W count toward the 20 credits.

Withdrawals do not count in student's GPA's and do not affect their academic standing. Repeating a course where a W grade was recorded does not remove it from the transcript nor remove it from the total withdrawal credits. Students withdrawing from all courses (i.e., withdraw from university) for a semester do not receive any W credits as their records will reflect a complete withdrawal, not selective.

Adding and dropping courses

  • A student may add a full semester course online through the sixth day of the semester. A student may add a course with instructor approval through the tenth day of the semester.

A student may drop a full semester course through the tenth day of the semester without a grade of W.

Grades of incomplete

  • A grade of "Incomplete" is assigned only when the student has been in attendance and has done passing work up to a time within three weeks of the close of the semester, or within one week of the close of the summer session. It may be assigned only upon agreement of the student and course instructor when extenuating circumstances make it impossible for the student to complete course requirements on time (Extenuating circumstances include serious illness, car accidents, death of a family member, etc. It does not include lateness due to procrastination, the student's desire to do extra work to raise his/her grade, allowing a student to retake the course, etc.). If a grade of "Incomplete" is submitted, the instructor will assign a reversion grade in the event the missing work is not completed. The instructor must also specify conditions and requirements for completing the deficient work, as well as any deadline shorter than the maximum time period allowed (see next paragraph).

Final grades for incompletes received in the Fall semester or Intersession, must be assigned by the last day of the following Summer semester. Final grades for incompletes received in the Spring semester or Summer Session, must be assigned by the last day of the following Fall semester. When a student has completed the deficient work, the instructor will assign a final grade. An incomplete that is not completed within the time limit specified above would automatically be changed to the reversion grade assigned by the instructor at the time the incomplete was submitted. Instructors may assign a final grade anytime within the time period specified above. An incomplete remains on the student's permanent record and is accompanied by the final grade (i.e. I/A, I/B, I/C).

A student cannot graduate with a grade of "Incomplete" on his or her record. At the end of the term in which the student will graduate, a grade of "Incomplete" in any UI course reverts to the reversion grade. Reverted grades are included in the computation of the student's cumulative grade-point average at graduation. Nonetheless, a student who has graduated may make up the incomplete work within the usual time limit in an effort to raise the grade on the permanent record.

Class ratings

  • Class ratings are determined as follows: Sophomore-26 credits, Junior-58 credits, and Senior-90 credits.

Credit requirements

  • For purposes other than fees, UI students in all divisions except the College of Graduate Studies must carry 12 credits each semester or summer session to be classified as full time.

For fee and tuition purposes only, students carrying 8 or more credits, regardless of the number of credits they register for, are classified as full-time students.
