Barry Willis, Associate Dean for Outreach, College of Engineering (PO Box 441014, Moscow ID 83844-1014; phone (208) 885-6373; eo.uidaho.edu (http://eo.uidaho.edu/delivery, http://www.); outreach@uidaho.edu).

The Engineering Outreach (EO) Program was founded in 1973. Established with the help of a Kellogg Foundation grant, EO's first courses were delivered on videotape to regional corporations and libraries. Today, courses offered by various academic departments are delivered online to hundreds of students worldwide each semester. Students can earn graduate degrees, academic certificates, or transfer credits completely at a distance. Students taking courses delivered by EO follow the same admission procedures as on-campus students, and receive advising and administrative support from the academic departments.

Master's Degree Programs. Engineering Outreach delivers course work required for the master's degrees listed below. All required course work may be completed at a distance, and most students visit the campus near the end of their program to take a comprehensive exam or defend a thesis.

  • Biological and Agricultural Engineering – emphasis in water management (M.S., M.Engr.)
  • Civil Engineering (M.Engr.)
  • Computer Engineering (M.S., M.Engr.)
  • Computer Science (M.S.)
  • Electrical Engineering (M.S., M.Engr.)
  • Engineering Management (M.Engr.)
  • Geological Engineering (M.S.)
  • Mechanical Engineering (M.Engr.)
  • Teaching Mathematics (M.A.T.)

Academic Certificates. Engineering Outreach delivers courses that allow students to earn a graduate certificate in a specific area of study at a distance. Academic certificates provide opportunities for professional advancement, and build a strong foundation for future graduate study. Certificate courses in the following areas are available through EO:

  • Analog Integrated Circuit Design
  • Applied Geotechnics
  • Electric Machines and Drives
  • Power System Protection and Relaying
  • Process & Performance Excellence
  • Secure and Dependable Computing Systems
  • Semiconductor Theory and Devices
  • Statistics
  • Structural Engineering
  • Water Resources Engineering

Focus Areas. Selected academic departments offer courses through Engineering Outreach, which may be applied toward degrees at the University or used for transfer credit. Engineering Outreach delivers courses in the following focus areas:

  • Business
  • Nuclear Engineering
  • Psychology – emphasis in human factors
  • Statistics
  • Water Resources

Course Delivery and Services

Engineering Outreach courses are recorded in University of Idaho studio classrooms and produced for online delivery by EO. Courses are semester-based and closely follow the on-campus schedule. Visit eo.uidaho.edu/calendar for specific dates.

In-class lectures are recorded and encoded in a high-resolution online digital format and saved as MPEG-4 video files. These lectures are available within three hours of being given on campus, and may be viewed in a web browser or saved on a computer and viewed later. Visit eo.uidaho.edu/delivery (http://eo.uidaho.edu/delivery, http://www.) for more information.

Supplementary course materials may be posted online, or provided in print. All course materials, including lectures, are provided for students' personal reference. They may not be sold or re-distributed, and reproduction is prohibited under copyright law.

Academic Support. Engineering Outreach Student Services Coordinators at eoreg@uidaho.edu assist with admission, registration, fee payments, course material/exam delivery, and related policies and procedures.

Instructor Contact. Instructors are available to grade student work and answer questions throughout the semester. Students can reach instructors by e-mail, fax or by toll-free telephone; and contact information is provided on the EO website.

Exams. Students are responsible for finding their own exam proctors, who supervise the exam process and return completed exams to Engineering Outreach. Exam proctor selection is subject to approval, and is monitored throughout the semester. Proctors cannot be students' personal friends, family members, work subordinates or other EO students. Examples of acceptable proctors are: a) faculty or staff members at local educational institutions; b) students' work supervisors or training coordinators; c) U.S. military education officers; or d) public librarians.

Textbooks. Textbooks are not included in the course materials supplied by Engineering Outreach. They are usually listed on the University of Idaho Bookstore's website at www.vandalstore.com, and may be ordered online.

Internet Applications. Internet access is required for all EO students to view and/or download lectures and other course materials, manage and process e-mail, and to facilitate University services and processes. Visit the Admitted Students page, www.uidaho.edu/admitted, on the admissions office website for information about setting up the three main required Vandal accounts: VandalWeb, Blackboard and VandalMail.

U-Idaho Directory Information. E-mail addresses are considered "directory information," and will be kept confidential ONLY if students submit the Request to Prevent Disclosure of Directory Information form to the registrar's office. Visit www.registrar.uidaho.edu/forms/html (http://www., http://www.registrar.uidaho.edu/forms/html) to download this form.

Library Services. University of Idaho Library services are available to Engineering Outreach students at www.lib.uidaho.edu, and online video tutorials are provided for off-campus students. Select Off-Campus Access for information about services and how to obtain a library ID number.

Disability Support Services. The Disability Support Services Office (DSS) provides academic support services to students with temporary or permanent disabilities. Students requesting disability-related accommodations should contact DSS directly, either by e-mail or by phone, and must provide appropriate disability documentation every semester. Visit www.students.uidaho.edu/taap for more information.

Admission

Engineering Outreach students must be admitted to the University of Idaho as undergraduate, nondegree or graduate students; visit www.uidaho.edu/admissions to apply online. Non-U.S. citizens residing in the United States and other international students have additional admission requirements, which may include TOEFL scores or equivalent, and verification of current visa status.

Registration and Fees

Engineering Outreach provides a secure website, eo.uidaho.edu/forms, that includes forms required to register for EO courses. Courses offered through EO are not available for registration on VandalWeb, and may have earlier registration deadlines than courses offered on campus. Visit eo.uidaho.edu/calendar to view a current EO calendar.

Fees. Engineering Outreach students pay a per-credit fee with no distinction between resident/nonresident fees. Payment in full is expected at the time of registration, and must be received by the first day of on-campus classes to avoid late fees. Course fees are subject to change at any time by the Board of Regents of the University of Idaho; visit eo.uidaho.edu/fees for current fees.

Military Benefits. University of Idaho programs are approved by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), and students may use GI benefits or tuition assistance to help pay their Engineering Outreach course fees. Visit the University of Idaho Office of Veterans Affairs' at www.students.uidaho.edu/dos for more information.

Financial Aid. Nondegree students are not eligible for federal or state financial aid, but other EO students may qualify. Visit the Student Financial Aid Services Office's website at www.uidaho.edu/financialaid for information. Students planning to use financial aid to pay fees must have a completed file in the financial aid office before they can register for an EO course.

Course Status Changes. Visit eo.uidaho.edu/calendar for deadlines for requesting changes of course status (audit, credit, pass/fail or withdraw), and use the EO online forms system at eo.uidaho.edu/forms to request status changes.

Incompletes. A grade of "I" (Incomplete) can only be assigned if students have performed passing work, but extenuating circumstances prevent completion of the course on time. Both the instructor and the student must agree upon the "I" grade, and the final deadline for submitting work. Refer to General Requirements and Academic Procedures, Section F - Grades of Incomplete, in this catalog for more information.

Final Grade Reports and Transcripts. Final grades and unofficial transcripts are accessible through the University of Idaho's secure information system at www.vandalweb.uidaho.edu. A student ID number and PIN are required for access; visit www.uidaho.edu/registrar for more information. Official transcripts can be ordered through the registrar's office.
