CE 357 Properties of Construction Materials (4 cr)

Principles of construction materials, composition, physical and mechanical properties, test methods, data analysis and interpretations, and report writing; materials covered are aggregates, cements, concretes, metals, wood, and composites. Three lec and two hrs of lab.

Prereq: CE 215, Engr 350, Math 310 Coreq: Stat 301

Objective:

The main objective of this course is to give civil engineering juniors an understanding of the physical and mechanical properties of various types of construction materials, and introduce them to the fundamentals of the material behavior under loads. The course will cover various applications of construction materials.  

Textbook (Required):
Materials for Civil and Construction Engineers
, by Michael Mamlouk and John Zaniewski. Addison Wesley Longman, Inc., 3rd edition, 2011. The book shall be available at the bookstore. 

Course Format and Grading:

Class Assignments 12%):
There will be about 6-8 homework assignments. They carry 12% of the course grade

Lab Particiaption and Reports (25%)
The lab grade weighs 25% of the total course grade. Lab grade will be based on active participation in the lab and the quality of the submitted lab reports.

Course Portfolio (3%)
Students are requested to submit a course portfolio that integrates all course contents (class notes, slides, homework and lab reports). Portfolio grade will depend on the degree of completion and the neatness of the portfolio organization.

Exams (60%)
Two midterm exams: the first weighs 15%, and the second weighs 20%. A Final exam that weighs 25%. It is COMPREHENSIVE and covers all subjects from class and lab sessions.
