Psychometrics (Reliability and Validity)

An item analysis and a factor analysis have been conducted in each of the five pilot studies for the social character index. Thus far, the social character index has a Cronbach alpha of .72 and the moral character index has a Cronbach alpha of . 88. Keep in mind that the moral character index was created from the HBVCI which historically has established strong reliability and validity. A Factor analysis in the last the two pilot studies has shown a clear disjunction between the social character index and the moral character index. Content validity for the social character index has been established through expert opinion in the areas of Sport Philosophy and Sport Sociology. Construct validity for the social character index was established through the "known group difference method," in which athletes and non athletes show a statistically significant difference in their mean scores on the social character index.
