I am always looking for creative, bright, hard working, and motivated undergraduate and graduate students.

My expectations.  I expect you to be hard working, independent, and creative.  I expect you to be committed to and excited about your work.  While a student here, you can expect to have the opportunity to write grants, publish your work in refereed journals, make presentations at regional/national meetings, work hard in the lab and field, have a good time, and learn how to be a civil/environmental engineer.

What will you work on?  See the link on my website that discusses my research activities and interests.

How do you apply?  If you are interested in working with me, please send me an email or letter.  In it, please include as much of the following information as possible:

·         an outline of possible research topics

·         a summary of research experience

·         a list of relevant coursework

·         contact information for three references (if available)

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you do not yet have all this information together.

I also encourage you to apply for any graduate school fellowships for which you may qualify:

·         NSF

·         EPA STAR

·         ASEE

You can also go to the Civil Engineering department webpage for prospective graduate students for more information.

Undergraduates.  I often have ongoing projects in the lab that would be suitable for undergraduate research.  Interest or experience with microbiology, microbial ecology, or molecular biology lab techniques is a plus, but they are certainly not required; you will get the opportunity to learn these and other techniques.  If you are interested and are excited about doing research, then please contact me to talk about your interests and about joining the lab.

What do you need to do to find out about potentially joining the lab?  Send me an email or come see me.

Why should you join the lab?  Generally, if you are interested in the natural environment, wastewater treatment, microbial ecology, and/or microbiology, you would likely find the various research activities in my lab quite exciting and stimulating.  If you are potentially interested in attending graduate school, then it is a very good idea to have some research experience before you apply.  Conducting research as an undergraduate is also a great way to better clarify your interests before graduate school.

What would you do once you are here?  Work hard! and enjoy your time as a graduate student! We do a combination of field work, lab work, and data collection/analysis.  You might also be interested in developing your own project.

So if you are interested in working my lab, please send me an email.  I look forward to hearing from you.
