Design of Assessment and Evaluation Tools for Improved Learning Outcomes

March 2nd, 2004

8:30am -11:30am

SUB Gold Room

University of Idaho

This workshop was designed to expand knowledge about instruments for measuring high-level learning intended to give a framework for documenting and improving student learning and growth.  Special emphasis was given to the creation of rubrics that clearly distinguish between different levels in the achievement of learning outcomes.  Development of these tools involved item analysis, sequencing/clustering items, and crafting prompts for data collection.  Numerous examples were given how rubrics can support assessment and evaluation activities.

Workshop Themes:

bulletDistinguishing between instruments used to measure growth of conceptual knowledge and movement in life-long learning skills.
bulletIdentifying key features of rubrics that were previously developed to explore different ABET learning outcomes.
bulletProducing a new rubric of interest to engineering educators for use in classroom and program assessment.
