Resume and Cover Letter Assignments

Assignment Guidelines and Requirements:

A) Resume

Develop a professional resume. The resume must be directed toward a real job, internship or educational goal (grad or law school etc.) that you either are, will or would actually apply for, either now or directly after graduation. The job or internship should be directly related to you disciplinary major and long term career goals.

This assignment includes:

1) A Skills and Experience Worksheet, typed, in list form, usually one to two complete pages long. Bring this to the conference.  Hand this in with final resume packet.

 2) A copy of the job/internship/graduate program etc. description, job listing of the type of job your resume matches; bring to conference and turn in with resume.  Hand this in with final resume packet.

3) Conferencing with the instructor.

4) Complete Resume with four references (name, title/relationship, addresses, phone numbers and/or email addresses). See grade sheet.

B) Cover Letter, Letter of Recommendation or Admissions Essay

The cover letter matches the resume and in most cases should meet the same criteria. I will make exceptions in some cases, but check with me first for permission.

This assignment includes:

1) A copy of the job/internship description, job listing of the type of job your resume/cover letter matches, turned in with cover letter

2) Matching the cover letter to the job/internship listing

3) Turning in a copy of the resume with the cover letter.

Alternatively, you may also write a Letter Of Recommendation for yourself or for someone else, or, if you are applying to graduate or law school etc., you may also follow the program's guidelines to write an admissions essay.

Proposal/Report Option

As an option for students who already have a complete resume packet or who are graduating so far in the distance that this exercise seems meaningless: complete Proposal/Report, either working alone or in a group.  Students who choose this option will work one on one with the instructor to develop a project fitting their specific interests and needs.
