Drake English 313

English 313 Criteria-Match/Self Evaluation Assignment

This is a two-part evaluation email:

1) Self-Evaluation:  As objectively as possible and using the criteria and outline provided below, evaluate your performance in this class.

2) Improving The Class:  You can and should evaluate the instructor online, via Vandalweb, so in this assignment I am looking specifically for feedback and suggestions concerning the course assignments:  describe which you found most and least valuable and, most importantly, offer suggestions for new ones. As with the rest of this email and with everything you write, support your points as best you can by establishing and matching relevant criteria.

When drafting the memo, consider your overall purpose, and to achieve that purpose carefully apply all the basic theories covered throughout the semester. In other words, the content of the memo should not only discuss what you've learned this semester; it should also demonstrate you've learned that stuff by applying it directly to your writing. Incorporate as many of the theoretical and formatting lessons covered this semester as possible.

Guidelines:

A) Establish Your Criteria:

The criteria by which you should measure your performance can be found in:

1) The course syllabus, lecture notes and specific assignments. These describe the original standards you were expected to meet.

2) If you are evaluating your performance in 313, your original answers to the very first homework assignment, "Evaluate Your Communication Strengths and Weaknesses", and specifically the last three questions on that assignment.  These are also located in your first writing assignment.

As much as possible, always cite specific sources to describe the specific criteria by which you will measure your success or failure learning and applying the contents of this course; according to both you and the instructor, what specifically were you supposed to learn and practice in this course?

B) Criteria-Match:

In the second part, carefully discuss your performance in relation to each given criteria. For each criteria listed and described in Part A, above, refer to and describe specific evidence of your performance in relation to that criteria; for each thing you were expected to achieve or hoped to achieve, refer to evidence that shows how well you did or did not achieve it.

For evidence of your success or failure, consider referring to events outside of the class as well as the specific assignments:

1) Were you able to successfully apply the contents of this course outside of this course?

2) Why or why not? Did you try?

C) Summary and Plan of Action:

Based on the above evaluation, summarize your performance. What were your strengths and successes, and what were your weaknesses and failures?

What will you do in the future to apply your strengths and ameliorate your weaknesses? How will you know in the future whether or not you are achieving your purpose? What is the meaning of life and why don't human beings have tails? Who invented the cotton gin and who cares? Did anyone actually read this part of the assignment or is Tom sitting here typing it in vain? Verily, only time will tell.

 Specific Formatting Guidelines:

Length:  were this a printed document, it would/should come in at between a page and a half to two pages long, single spaced.

Send to Tom as an email: tdrake@uidaho.edu

There is no gradesheet for this assignment and you need not turn in drafts: just the email itself.
