Course Introduction

Course Module Description
The Learning Modules listed on the Modules page are Flash presentations designed to work with the textbook to help you master the concepts of the course. Most of the modules contain more than one sub module. They are organized in this way to keep the files relatively small to facilitate downloading. They are intended to be viewed consecutively, 1.1 before 1.2 for example. You haven’t completed the entire module until you have gone through all of the sub modules.

Whether you read the textbook before working through the module or after is a matter of personal preference but to be successful in the course, you should carefully work through each of them at least once. One of the advantages of a web course like this is that you can review the material at your convenience, at your pace, and multiple times.

We’ll be working through the Modules one by one as the semester progresses. Feel free to look ahead and see what’s coming up!

How to Start Your Assignment

  1. Log into Blackboard and go to the Envs541 course.
  2. Go to the Assignments area .
  3. Choose the appropriate problem set or exam.
  4. Select the assignment or exam file and click Download.
  5. Refer to this course's Help Pages for additional assistance.
How to Prepare Your Assignment

bulletYou will be expected to prepare your answers as a well-organized report in Microsoft Word. This report, as with all materials submitted in this class, should be formatted as though it was being submitted by an Environmental professional as a work product. Assume your audience is your management staff or an outside client who is familiar with the problem to be solved and who is somewhat familiar with statistical techniques.  Your task is to lay out the problem, the assumptions, the results, and the conclusions of your analysis in a way that any reasonably educated environmental professional or manager could understand.
bulletIf you need to include work done in another program such as Excel, cut-and-paste that information into Word and format it appropriately.  This includes using only the appropriate number of significant digits, including units, labeling each value, labeling graphs and graph axes, and so forth.
bulletDo not submit your Excel spreadsheet. You must excerpt the appropriate information, tables, and/or graphs and include them in your report.
bulletYour conclusions must be stated in language that is meaningful to the audience. That is, don't just give the statistical conclusion (Reject the null hypothesis for example). You must clearly state what the conclusion means to an environmental manager in language understandable to them.
