Course Description
During this course we will review the applications, potential and
limitations of methods for the remote sensing of fire management. This
will include looking at what we use for assessing fuels, monitoring fire
behavior, and evaluating and predicting immediate to long term fire
effects. We will focus on the interpretation of the results as
well as clarifying definitions of fire descriptors (fire intensity, fire
severity, and burn severity) and relative merits of remote sensing tools
for addressing them. Topics covered will include how to identify an
appropriate mapping approaches applicable to different types of imagery.
The theory behind these topics will be covered in the first two
sections, while the later sections will focus on the applications of
this theory to real-world management objectives.
The course contains a series of lectures, hands-on labs, and discussion
via Blackboard. Students enrolled in J535 have additional readings and a
class project. They are also expected to actively steer the Blackboard
discussions.
