Has the Theory of Reference Rested on a Mistake?

Work on reference and modality by Saul Kripke, David Kaplan, and others has taught us to distinguish the theory of content from the theory of reference determination.  Because time is like modality, the lessons we've learned about the contents of names in modal contexts carry over to names in temporal contexts.  However, reflection on some of the ways in which time differs from modality should lead us to reconsider not only the descriptive and causal theories (or pictures) of reference determination but also the philosophical problem of reference determination itself.  Perhaps the theory of reference has rested on a mistake.
