Scale, Freedom, and Determinism

We use models to construct analogies between the questions of determinism and control and some parallel areas of thought within science, specifically: statistics, physics, ecology, and sociology. Each of these disciplines has embedded in them issues of scale: scale affects observations, scale affects processes, and scale affects systems. We argue that any resolution of control and determinism must accommodate scale, and provide examples.
