We're sometimes told that philosophy begins in doubt.  But in what sort of doubt?  (Are there sorts of doubt?)  I elucidate a distinction between the sort of doubt we might have about UFOs or global warming, and the sort Descartes has as he begins his Meditations.  The latter sort of doubt, and not the former, seems to be the sort in which philosophy  begins.
