Financial Aid

The cost of studying abroad can vary widely.  As cost is likely an important factor for you, you must first decide how much you are able to spend to study abroad and look at how much financial aid (loans, grants, scholarships, etc.) you usually receive.  If you find that a program you are considering is too expensive, then you might look at other programs in less expensive countries or cities, programs with less support options, or you may decide to choose a shorter program. 

A good starting point to determine what you can and cannot afford is to look at the University of Idaho's or your home school's estimated costs of attendance. For a full-time undergraduate student with no dependents, the total estimated cost of attendance at the University of Idaho for one academic year is $18,700 for Idaho residents and $30,292 for non-residents.  This should give you an idea of what you usually spend in a year.  While there are no Study Abroad programs that will match these costs exactly, you will find that there are a variety of programs available--some that cost less, some that have similar costs, and some that do cost more than what you spend at the University of Idaho or at your home university.  Overall, you will likely find that it may be much more feasible to study abroad than you might have thought, given the financial resources available to you.

University of Idaho students may apply for most types of financial aid for their study abroad program.  In some instances, if the program costs are more than it would normally cost to study at UI, a student may receive additional financial aid.  Typically this aid is in the form of loans.  Eligibility for additional aid is dependent on a number of factors, including class standing, federal award limits, etc.  Students should consult their financial aid advisors early in the program application process to determine if they are eligible to receive additional financial aid.

If students are not eligible for additional aid, they may want to consider applying for loans (referred to as private or alternative loans) through their local banks.  Interest and repayment rates vary widely so students should do some comparison-shopping before “signing on the dotted line.”  Students should contact UI’s office of Student Financial Aid Services for a list of local banks providing student loans.

Non-University of Idaho students cannot receive financial aid from UI.  However, in some instances, these students can continue receiving financial aid from their home university even though they are studying abroad through a UI program.  Students should consult their home university financial aid office early in the study abroad application process to determine if they are eligible to receive aid while studying abroad.  If the home university requires UI to sign a consortium agreement for financial aid purposes in order to disburse the aid, this document should be faxed to the UI Study Abroad Office at (208) 885-2859.

UI SCHOLARSHIPS FOR UI STUDENTS

International Experience Grants

International Experience Grant - $157,000 available each year                                       
Sophomores, juniors, and seniors (must have attended UI for one year) w/min. 2.5 GPA. Average awards: $1000 for semester or academic year programs, $250-$750 for summer programs. Anticipated number of awards: 150. Awards determined by GPA, financial need, and class standing. There is no application; if you have submitted a complete application to the IPO office by the following dates: summer/fall/academic yearApril 1; spring—October 15 you will automatically be considered.

Willis E. Sullivan, III Memorial Study Abroad Scholarship                                                                                                         Application deadline: April 1
Anticipated awards per year: 2-3, up to $5000.  Eligibility: Idaho resident; juniors or seniors only; participating in a semester or yearlong foreign language/culture study abroad program; minimum 3.2 GPA; demonstrated financial need. Fill the GAP

Fill the GAP (Global Account Program) allows students to get a head start on study abroad by saving early for an IFSA-Butler program. First Generation Scholar Program

ISA Diversity Scholarships

For study on an ISA program.  Must be enrolled in second or third year of undergraduate education at time of ISA program, have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA. Number of awards:  2 x $1,000 for Summer Study, 2 x $2,000 for Fall Study, 2 x $2,000 for Winter/Spring Study.  For more information go to:

Dr. Carlos E. Castaneda Memorial Working Scholarship
App. deadline: Oct. 30(winter/spring); Feb. 28 (summer); April 30 (fall/academic year)
As a working scholarship, winners must be prepared  to work up to 10 hours per week in the host country for the full program term. This work may include tasks such as blogging, taking photos, orientation materials updating, data entry, clerical, or other similar responsibilities. Students must be sophomore/junior at time of study abroad, have at least a 3.25 GPA, completed one year of college level foreign language or the equivalent, and be on financial aid. The total awards are now $45,000 and they are now offered for semester, trimester and year program only. The distribution of the awards is 10 fall awards for $2,000 each, 10 winter/spring awards for $2,000 each, and 2 year awards for $2,500 each. Michaela Farnum Memorial Scholarship (Summer only)

These scholarships are offered for summer programs only. The distribution of the scholarship is 5 summer awards for $1,000 each, and is available for affiliates and non-affiliates. Students must be sophomore/junior at time of study abroad, have at least a 3.25 GPA, completed one year of college level foreign language or the equivalent, and be on financial aid. Sibling and Repeat Student Grants
ISA and ELAP offers grants to students who have previously participated in an ISA or ELAP program, regardless of the length of time (if any) that passes between the two programs. New Prague Scholarships for  Spring 2013
New scholarships are now available for Spring 2013 to study in Prague, Czech Republic! Ten $500 scholarships will be awarded to help students study and live in one of the world’s most beautiful cities. To be eligible, applicants must have a minimum 2.5 gpa and be accepted to the Spring 2013 Semester program. Scholarship recipients will be required to submit 50-100 photos upon their return that best represent what they loved about living in Prague and best capture their study abroad experience there. Applications will be due November 1; the scholarship application itself will be available on Student Gateway account once students are accepted into the program. Late applications will be accepted if spaces still available, however, it would be in their best self-interest to apply as soon as possible.

USAC Legacy Scholarship
Available to the families—children, siblings, and spouses—of USAC alumni to attend a USAC Specialty Program. Awards will be given in the amount of $100 for winter session, $300 for summer session, and $500 for semester. Applications will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis, with the final deadline being 30 days prior to departure. Details will be posted to students’ Gateway accounts. Félix Menchacatorre Memorial Scholarship
Memorial scholarship available to students attending a semester program in San Sebastián or Bilbao. Award amount $500. Eligible scholarship applications will be posted to your USAC Student Gateway account.

R.J. Simcoe Memorial Scholarship
Memorial scholarship available to UNR students attending a semester program in San Sebastián or Bilbao. Award amount $500. Eligible scholarship applications will be posted to your USAC Student Gateway account.

University of Oslo Scholarship (Oslo, Norway)
Available to students accepted on the USAC Oslo program with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Eligible scholarship applications will be posted to your USAC Student Gateway account.

GBI International Conservation Scholarship
Generously sponsored by the Great Basin Institute as part of their commitment to environmental research, education, and conservation, the GBI International Conservation Scholarship serves to help students study environmental- and conservation-related topics abroad. A major or minor in science/environmental studies is preferred but not required. Once their time abroad is complete, awardees will be asked to report on their experience abroad, including the coursework, research, or volunteering they did related to environmental conservation. More information will be posted to your online account once you complete your USAC application. Award amounts $500 - $1000.

Massey University Scholarship (New Zealand)
Scholarship Application Deadlines: November 1, 2011 for February 2012; May 1, 2012 for July 2012
Available to students accepted to study at Massey University. Applicants to any of the three campus locations in New Zealand – Palmerston North, Auckland, or Wellington – are eligible. National Security Education Program (NSEP) David L. Boren Fellowships
Application deadline: mid-January (UI campus deadline)

NSEP focuses on geographic areas, languages, and fields of study deemed critical to U.S. national security, and applicants must fulfill a one-year service requirement after the exchange. Average award: $5,000- $10,000 per semester for up to two semesters. For more information, please go to

Critical Language Scholarships for Intensive Summer Institutes

LIVFUND (Live, Intern, Volunteer) Scholarship Fund
Application deadline: Apply any time, beginning six months in advance of program start date.
For anyone over the age of 18 interested in studying, interning or volunteering in Latin America. The average award is $500. Applicants who are awarded the scholarship must agree to post at least three blog entries on the LIVFund blog detailing their abroad experience. The Killam Fellowships Program

for following Academic Year
For American undergraduate students enrolled at four year degree granting institutions. Students in all fields of study are welcome to apply. Average awards: $5,000 for a semester and $10,000 for an academic year, plus health insurance allowance, up to $800 for in country travel, orientation and possible tuition assistance. Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship                                           Application deadline: September of year prior to study
Must be nominated by host institution and must be a graduate student pursuing a doctorate degree. Both Canadian and international students are eligible to be nominated for a Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship.  The award is valued at $50,000 per year, for up to three years. More information at

Erik Barnes China/Taiwan Scholarship for UI students

Taiwan Scholarship Program for U.S. students                                                                                                                  Application deadline : January 30
Chinese Language Program: awarded monthly stipend of NT$25,000(NT$32=USD1, subject to change) up to four years, Undergraduate Program: awarded monthly stipend of NT$25,000 for one year, Postgraduate Program: awarded monthly stipend of NT$30,000; maximum duration of an award for a master degree is two years and for doctoral degree is three years. CRCC Asia’s China Internship Program Scholarships                                         App available: Nov 1-30
Provides one, two, or three month internships in Beijing and Shanghai. Fluent English is the only language requirement and there is a program start date each month of the year. They offer a wide range of placements across various industries with now over 2000 alumni from over 60 countries worldwide. This year they are giving away 12 scholarships of varying amounts. DAAD German Exchange Scholarships
Scholarships through DAAD include: undergraduate scholarship for study in Germany, summer school, graduate study scholarship, graduate study scholarships for artists and musicians, summer research internship in science and engineering (RISE), internXchange, EMGIP-Budestag Internship, SIP: study & internship program, German studies research grant, and graduate research grant. Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals (CBYX)            App deadline: beginning of December
Available to students and recent graduates. Yearlong fellowship to study and intern in Germany, open to applicants in all career fields though preference given to students in vocational, technical, engineering, business, agricultural, and scientific fields. The CBYX program annually provides 75 participants with two months of intensive German language training, a semester of study at German University or University of Applied Sciences, a five-month internship with a German company in the participant’s career field, housing, transatlantic airfare, health insurance, and a monthly stipend for living expenses. Work Immersion Study Program (WISP)

Summer fellowship program open to students in vocational fields who have completed at least 4 semesters of study by the start of the program in June 2013. JASSO (Japan Student Services Organization)                                                                                                      Application deadline: As early as possible
Award based on good character, financial need and commitment to Japanese studies. Award amount is approximately $800 per month. Language and Culture Assistantships in Spain

The Ministry of Education of Spain is pleased to announce over 2,000 grants for American and Canadian participants to serve as teaching assistants in Spain, sharing their native knowledge of the English or French language and North American culture in Spanish public K-12 schools. They will have a 12-16 hour weekly schedule. Teaching assistants receive a minimum monthly allowance of 700 Euros, an orientation course at the beginning of the school year and full medical insurance. South Korea

 

Talk Program         

Application deadline: June (for term beginning in August), December (for term beginning in February)

The “Teach and Learn in Korea” (TaLK) program is sponsored by the Korean government. It invites undergraduate students (who have completed at least two years of undergraduate study), recent graduates and graduate students to apply to teach conversational English in rural Korean elementary schools. The program provides a 1-month orientation, round-trip airfare, a settling-in allowance, a monthly living stipend of approximately $1,300, health insurance and organized trips to historical locations in Korea. Turkish Coalition of America
TCA awards up to 100 scholarships per year for African American, Hispanic American, and Native American students. These scholarships are awarded to eligible undergraduate and graduate students who have been accepted to a university in Turkey, The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus or Bosnia and Herzegovina. TCA will award grants up to $2,000 per calendar year to full time undergraduates (graduate students on a case by case basis) who have been accepted to a study abroad program in Turkey for a semester or summer respectively. US Teaching Assistantship Program in Austria

The American-Scandinavian Foundation Awards
Awards for Study in Scandinavia (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden)

The ASF will offer around $300,000 to outstanding American students, scholars, professionals and artists for study and/or research in Scandinavia. Fellowships of up to $23,000 are intended to support an academic year-long stay, and priority is given to students at the graduate level who need to spend time at foreign academic or research institutions. Grants of up to $5,000 are considered more suitable for shorter research visits, both on the graduate or post-doctoral level. Funding is available to candidates in all fields. Chinese Government Scholarship for American Students

Awards for post-graduate study in China. Tuition, fees, and medical insurance are covered and students receive a travel and living allowance.

Whitaker International Program – Fellowships

Awards for graduating seniors through doctoral studies. The Whitaker International Fellows and Scholars Program sends emerging leaders in U.S. biomedical engineering (or bioengineering) to undertake a self-designed project that will enhance their own careers within the field. In the first five years of the Whitaker Program, 140 grants have been awarded to Fellows and Scholars to conduct projects in over 25 countries worldwide. Average award: entire cost of program. University of the Sunshine Coast - Anne Wexler Scholarship Program in Public Policy

One Anne Wexler Scholarships will be awarded annually to a U.S. citizen to complete an Australian Master's program in Public Policy areas. Areas of study may include health, sustainability, energy, climate change, regional security, political science, history, or government relations, amongst others. The scholarship will be awarded for a maximum of two years, depending on the Master's program. Benefits include: AUD$30,000- Annual stipend for up to two years, AUD$25,000 - Annual tuition for up to two years, AUD$5,000 - Return travel allowance, AUD$6,000 - Establishment allowance, AUD$4,000 - Insurance allowance. The scholarships are administered by the Australian-American Fulbright Commission in Canberra, and funded by the Australian Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations. The Global Studies Grant for Student Travel and Study Abroad
Designed to support foreign language training and academic studies abroad, this grant provides supplemental funds for American students who already are studying abroad under the auspices of an official study abroad program conducted by an accredited academic institution. GSF is particularly interested in funding the study of strategically significant countries and languages. Selection criteria include academic performance, program merit, and outreach potential. Grant recipients will be expected to acknowledge GSF's support, to report on their experiences, and to work with GSF to share those experiences upon return.
