Combustion Dynamics
The research lab is involved in a series of projects to assess the
combustion dynamics of coarse woody
debris, rotten stumps and their associated root channels, and the
emissions that these fuels ultimately produce. This research includes an
assessment of processes that govern the combustion dynamics and the
ecological impacts of these fire-effects.
Rotten Logs
Within the research lab, Joshua Hyde, is
researching how to improve our consumption predictions on rotten logs. Josh,
who is also the Air Quality and Smoke Management
Training Coordinator, has funding via the NPS to both organize
air quality online
trainings and also research smoke emissions from these fuels.
Rotten Stumps and Associated Root Channels
The research lab is conducting
research to further evaluate the emissions and other fire-effects due to the
combustion of rotten stumps and their associated root channels. The lab is
coordinating with Wei Min Hao at the USFS Fire Sciences Lab who recently
finished a
JFSP project looking at emissions due to the prolonged residual
combustion.
