Software

You will need to use the simulation software developed by PTV America and Econolite to complete the MOST course.  The simulation software includes three components:

  • The VISSIM microsimulation model
  • The ASC/3 traffic controller emulator
  • A software communications tool that links these first two components into an environment called software-in-the-loop simulation

The MOST software is available at the following link.  The software is available for classroom use only, and only during the time that you are completing the MOST course.

Installation instructions:

  1. Before proceeding with the installation, uninstall any previous versions of the MOST software tools.
  2. Download the "MOST Setup.zip" folder to your computer using the above link.
  3. Extract the contents of the "MOST Setupup.zip" folder to a temporary directory on your computer.
  4. Open the folder and double-click on “setup.exe” file to begin the installation.
  5. The installation will take several minutes as the MOST, VISSIM, and ASC/3 software components are installed.
  6. Please contact mkyte@uidaho.edu for IP address information for the license server.

You will have the benefits of a realistic modeling environment (VISSIM) and a software version of Econolite's widely used ASC/3 traffic controller.  We should emphasize that the MOST course is not about learning how to use a specific simulation model, though the experiments that you will complete are conducted using the VISSIM microsimulation model.  Nor is it about a specific traffic signal controller, even though you will use Econolite’s ASC/3 controller emulator.  But these tools create a realistic environment in which you will learn by doing the experiment, analyzing data that you collect, and drawing conclusions about what makes good signal timing practice.
