    America's Best Value Colleges

October 2002:

* UI has been named one of America's Top 50 universities. Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine has ranked UI 48th among the 100 best public colleges in the country, 11th in the West and second in the Pacific Northwest. It is the first time UI has made the Top 50 in Kiplinger's. Two years ago, the last time the magazine ranked public universities, UI ranked 69th. Others in the Top 50 include The Ohio State University, University of Washington and UCLA. The rankings are based on quality measures - such as entrance exam scores of the freshman class of 2001 and how many freshmen returned for their sophomore year - as well as financial measures, including total cost and the average debt a student accumulates before     graduation. President Bob Hoover said inclusion in Kiplinger's Top 50 "demonstrates that despite recent fee increases for students, the UI continues to be one of the best college values in the country. Moreover, our goal since adoption of the UI Strategic Plan has been to be ranked among the top 50 public universities in the United States, and this recognition allows us to achieve that goal."

* UI Fight Song: Portland Oregonian columnist Norm Maves, Jr. recently ranked UI's fight song as the No. 1 college fight song in the country. "'Go Vandals' is the once and future king of college fight songs," he said, "with a fanfare lead-in that could motivate a successful infantry charge."
