Travel Demand Forecasting: Theory and Concepts

Experience Based Analysis

The three major techniques used for Trip Generation Analysis are Cross-Classification, Multiple Regression Analysis, and Experience Based Analysis. Experience Based Analysis, one of the most commonly used techniques, is founded primarily on experience. The Institute of Transportation Engineer’s Manual of Trip Generation is one of the best sources of generalized trip generation rates. The manual is a compilation of data from all over North America on many different types of land uses. Within the manual, productions and attractions for each type of land use are related to some measurable variable. For example, a shopping center might produce a certain number of trips for each employee. Simply asking for the employment roster would allow a transportation engineer to estimate the total number of trips that are generated by the shopping center employees. To establish local credibility, a survey of similar land uses in the area may also need to be conducted.
