If you are unfamiliar with traffic signal operation, please consult the background section before doing the case studies!! Everything will make more sense and be a little easier!

In the following case studies we will solve problems on two and three phase-signalized intersections using pretimed signal operations. The main objective of these case studies is to calculate the cycle length and green time to make a traffic control plan. We will then use the plan to do the real time simulation. The steps followed in solving the problems are shown in the flow chart below.

For each problem, links are given to explain the steps and check the calculations. Please stick to the phase plan if it is given and do the case studies in numeric order. By doing the case studies you should better understand the relation between cycle length and the concepts of phasing, intersection geometry, traffic volume, and green splits.
