Course costs include a $25 registration fee (this is the clerical fee the university charges for any course that will be officially recorded on a transcript), plus $15 per class night (for example, a two night course like Financial Management costs $25 + $15 + $15 = $55.  

 

March 5, & 12

Financial Management: Learn how to better manage your organization’s financial matters from a position of knowledge, skill, control and effective leadership. Also learn how to prepare for an audit, and implement new techniques for developing and managing your program and organizational outcomes through budgeting, oversight, and policies, while communicating the organizations value to prospective funders. 2 classes; Tuesdays; 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM. Cost $55.00. Instructors are Jeff Conroy, Executive Director of Saint Vincent de Paul and Shelly Enderud-City Administrator for City of Post Falls.  Location:  Molstead Library on the NIC campus, Room 264.

April 9, 16, & 23

Board Development: Explore how to find, choose and retain the “near perfect” board member, while defining responsibilities and lines of authority leading to a strong partnership between board and staff. Emphasis will be on solving conflicts between board and staff. Participants will learn how to motivate a board to fundraise, design a Strategic Master Plan, use self evaluations and become effective communicators and community advocates; 3 classes; Tuesdays; April 9, 16, and 23; 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM. Cost $70.00. Instructors are Bob Over, Director of the Professional Nonprofit Leadership Certificate Program at the University of Idaho, Jeff Conroy, Executive Director of Saint Vincent de Paul and Ruth Pratt, Executive Director of Development at the Coeur d’Alene Public Library.  Location:  Molstead Library on the NIC campus, Room 264.

April 25

Vision and Leadership: We will discuss components and development of a compelling vision, the dynamic tension created between current reality and future envisioned state, creating alignment within the organization, the relationship of Board and CEO in implementing a vision and the role of leadership in achieving that vision.  Discussion will center on actual examples of successes and failures.  Learning outcomes include being able to analyze effective components of a viable vision, understanding the impact of vision on organizational dynamics and knowing the role of leadership in implementation of a compelling vision. One class, Thursday, April 25; 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM;  Cost $40.  We will discount this class to $25 (by eliminating the $15 class fee).  Instructor is Dr. Joe Dunlap, President of North Idaho College.  Location:  Molstead Library on the NIC campus, Room 264.

Legal and Ethical Issues: This class will review critical legal and ethical issues that boards and staff must be actively aware of. Examples are: legal duties and responsibilities of nonprofit Boards to oversee the organization’s mission, goals, and finances; guarding against conflicts of interest; legal and ethical problems surrounding fundraising activities, reporting requirements, and legal responsibilities in working with staff and volunteers. 2 classes; May 7 and 14; Tuesdays, 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM. Cost $55.00. Instructor is Jay Sturgell, Atty., Court Assistant.

May 21 and 28

Volunteerism: This class will cover keys to attracting, training, motivating and retaining a vital group of volunteers who can leverage the efforts of paid staff, while contributing to cost savings, and growth of program. Class participants will learn easy and practical techniques for creating an effective volunteer program that is critical to creating a strong and sustainable organization, and much more. 2 classes; May 21 and 28; Tuesdays, 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM. Cost $55.00. Instructors are Phil Altmeyer, Executive Director, Union Gospel Mission, and Jackie Maker, Volunteer Director, Union Gospel Mission.
