Checklist

The following checklist can be used by those who are designing and conducting public involvement activities as well as by managers interested in evaluating the usefulness and relevance of the public involvement process. It highlights important questions that must be considered in planning public involvement, as well as the information that should be included in reports on the process. The questions can be applied to a single activity (e.g., a series of focus groups) or to an entire process (e.g., comments on draft management plan).

◘ What was the issue? Specifically, what were the questions or issues that called for a public involvement process?

◘ Who are the publics? Some or all of the following criteria can be used to define the public.

bulletGeography (local, regional, national)
bulletInterest (e.g., visitors, neighbors, concessionaires)
bulletDemographics (e.g., age, gender)
bulletOccupations
bulletAffiliations

◘ How many people participated in the public involvement activity or process? What was their level of involvement?

◘ When did this public involvement activity take place? Be specific about the times of the entire process as well as any specific activity being described.

◘ What public involvement methods were used, and why? Briefly describe the techniques and how they were applied in this situation.

◘ How were the data analyzed? What methods of qualitative or quantitative analysis were used?

◘ What were the results of the public involvement process? What were the major findings of the public involvement process and how do they impact agency decision-making concerning the issue at hand?

◘ Who planned, supervised and/or conducted the public involvement process? Who did the analysis of the data?
