Course Description:  This three-credit course provides an introduction to the basic skills needed to be an effective counselor in the area of substance abuse treatment. Topics that will be covered include 1) the helping process, 2) the helping relationship, and 3) helping skills, including active listening, paraphrasing, clarifying, reflecting, and problem solving.

Course Outcomes:  Upon completion of this course, participants will have/be able to

Describe the helping process.

Describe the helping relationship.

Describe a variety of helping strategies for reducing the negative effects of substance abuse and depression.

Demonstrate basic helping skills, including active listening, paraphrasing, clarifying, reflecting, and problem solving.

Demonstrate the development of a helping relationship with the client characterized by warmth, respect, genuineness, congruence and empathy.

bullet

Demonstrate engaging the client in the treatment and recovery process.

bullet

Demonstrate client-counselor collaboration in the development of realistic, achievable goals consistent with achieving and maintaining recovery.

Describe the process of adapting of counseling strategies to the individual characteristics of the client, including but not limited to disabilities, gender differences, sexual orientation, developmental levels, culture, ethnicity, age and health status.

Describe the elements of a crisis situation.

Demonstrate the application of crisis management skills.

Explain the addiction professional's obligation to adhere to ethical and behavioral standards of conduct in the helping profession.

Explain the confidentiality rights of clients, program procedures that safeguard them and exceptions imposed by statute.

Demonstrate respect and nonjudgmental attitudes towards the client in all contacts with other professional or agencies.

Explain the importance of self-awareness in one's personal, professional and cultural life.
