Three easy steps to create a web page out of your fact sheet.

Step 1: Start the web page with Netscape Composer from a template:

  • Download the web page template  by opening it in Netscape Navigator (yes, you do need to use Netscape Navigator instead of Microsoft Explorer as a web browser). Load this file in Netscape then click here to open template.
  • Once you have the template open, start editing by clicking "File, Edit" on the drop-down menu (this will open Netscape Composer).
  • Then, save the file by clicking on  "File, Save" on the drop-down menu.
  • Save file on you computer/disk as "one or two words" that describe your project.  For example,  "moose_sedge.html" or "sheep_weed.html"

When creating web pages is it important not to have font codes in the text so please follow the these direction carefully. This step will also help us create a very uniform look for our web pages

Step 2: Convert you Fact Sheet to a Text File to make it ready for your web page:

  • Open your fact sheet in your word processor (MS Word or Word Perfect).
  • Save File As a text file (File, Save as, Text only, on drop-down menu in MS word) or (File, Save as, ASCII DOS, on drop-down menu in Word Perfect) and remember where you saved the file and what name you gave it.
  • Open your new text file by going to the directory where you saved it and double clicking on it.  This should open the file with the Notepad Program (notepad.exe) if you use windows. (I am not sure what will happen if you are using a Mac).  Let me know if you have trouble (885-4394).  This step will remove all the text formatting in your document

Step 3: Cut and Paste information into the web page.  Now, you are ready to enter information from your "fact sheet" text document into your new web page.

  • Make sure you have your text document open (in notepad or similar program) and the web page opened in "Netscape Composer."
  • Enter your title into the web page
  • Enter your name where it requested in the web page
  • Enter the title of the first section of your page (for example "Introduction")
  • Now, Cut the paragraphs in your first section from the notepad (text file)  and Paste the section to the web page editor.
  • Keep cutting and pasting section by section until you have complete all sections.  If you don't use all the sections outlined in the template, just go to the section you want to delete, then Right click, Table delete, Cell.  If you need to add a section just go to the last section and then Right click, Table insert, Cell.
  • If you are having trouble getting the right number of lines between paragraphs, try using the "shift+return" key instead of just the "return" key.
  • You can also make links to relevant web pages, with the "links" feature in the editor.
  • Please don't change the font size or color; this way we can maintain a common look.
If you are skilled with another web browser, such as Front Page or Dreamweaver, feel free to use it to create your web page. However, please keep it simple. I don't want to inherit a bunch of funny html codes.

When you are done.... just e-mail me your web page file. I'll post them all on the web.

Pictures? You may have a burning desire to add a picture or 2 to your web page. This can be done though it is not necessary.  If you want to add a picture it is important the file is not too many kilobytes and loads quickly. If you know what you are doing... go ahead and add up to 2 pictures. If you want to add a picture or 2 but aren't fluent in web mastering, just send me 1 or 2 pictures as tif or jpg files and note in your web page where you  would like them inserted.  (For example, "Insert picture of pig here".)
