Wildland Fire Management Strategies and Tactics

The purpose of this section of the class is to explain the strategies and tactics employed by wildland fire management personnel in the United States. We will describe historical and current practices and via lesson learned videos evaluate what is effective. The lectures and readings in this section, will enable the student to achieve the following learning objectives:

  • Understand the principal methods of fire suppression, including initial attack, indirect attack, and mop-up

  • Understand the principal initial attack tactics

  • Recognize and Understand sources of common wildfire hazards

  • Understand what resources are available to fire managers

  • Know what WFDSS is and Understand how it works.
