Wilbur Johnson

Listen as Wilbur Johnson, Warm Springs Elder, reflects on the meaning of of the Columbia River, Celilo Falls, and the Salmon for his people.

  • Part 1  In a time before the coming of human peoples, Wilbur talks about the Swallows and the Deer, and their relation to the Salmon. 

  • Part 2 Wilbur relates some of the ways the salmon is respected by the Indian peoples - of sharing with others, of giving back to the salmon, and of honoring the Creator with the Salmon Feast.

  • Part 3 Wilbur talking about the seasons and locations for salmon fishing from the scaffolds at Celilo Falls and Spear Fish at The Dalles.

  • Part 4 Wilbur discusses the use of scaffolds and the "dangers" in set and dip net fishing for salmon.

  • Part 5 Wilbur discusses where some chiefs of the area resided, including Tommy Thompson, and the importance of trade.

  • Part 6 Wilbur discusses how the people communicated over long distances, using "fast travelers," and remembers the events of a year, with "yarn."

  • Part 7 Wilbur talks about the "June Hawgs" and the difficultly of dipnetting, and about barging the smolts, the "biggest mistake biologists ever made."

  • Part 8 Wilbur considers some of the destructive consequences of the dams, referring to the "killer dams," the lose of the "Blue Backs," and how the water has become "dirty."
