6:45 am gather and depart at 7:00 - Depart Moscow (Sweet Ave. Lot). Geology (Kevin Brackne), Palouse Falls, environmental issues, song, Woody Guthrie and the BPA, storytelling, naming.
1:00 - Celilo Falls (lunch, Wilbur Johnson, Warm Springs elder.) 2:30 - Maryhill Museum, Maryhill Winery. Agriculture, (wine), migrant communities.
6:00 - Yakima Best Western Peppertree Hotel (509-453-8898).
7:30 - Dinner at El Mirador.
Wed. May 21- SMALL TOWNS TO LARGE CITIES, ENVIRONMENT
8:00 - Travel from Yakima (Northern Exposure clips), stop in Roslyn (Wendy
McClure). Forests (Lauren Fins.) Discuss transportation issues (I-5, I-95, bridges, proposed
light rail and monorail systems) en route (Nels Reese. Lunch around 1 at Pho Bac
(corner of Jackson and Boren)
2:00 - Check in at hotel(Claremont Hotel, 4th and Virginia, 206-448-8600)
2:45 - Wallking/city bus: downtown Seattle including Convention Center, Freeway Park
(Steve Drown), new civic buildings on 5th Ave. (tour new city hall?).
(Harbour tour at 4 or Smith Tower.)
7:00 - Free evening
Thurs. May 22 - DESIGN, URBAN ISSUES, and ART
8:30 - Seattle design/planning and sense of place; Rick Sundberg and Peter Miller at
Peter Miller’s Bookstore, 1930 1st Ave.); Seattle Architectural Foundation,
(Smith Tower)
11:30 - outside dwellers, urban poverty, and the new
urbanism. Lunch at Farestart, then to Pioneer Square (Gary Johnson, Jennifer Meisner)
1:30 - SoDo area artist studio tour (Scott Fife, 1941 1st. Ave. S..) to 2:30.
4:30 - Presentation by Seattle choreographer Mary Sheldon Scott, and composer Jarrad
Powell at On the Boards (1st Ave. and Roy)
6:00 - Dinner at Mediterranean Kitchen (Roy St.)
8:00-9:30 - Performance of Kingdom by Scott and Powell at On the Boards
Friday: May 23 - THE ASIAN–AMERICAN COMMUNITY
8:30 - Wing Luke Museum (meet Bob Santos, Karen and Roy Ko) .Exhibits: Asian American
experience in the NW, Densho project.
9:45 - Panama Hotel (Santos and Kos, Jan Johnson,owner); ID walking tour
11:45 - Dim Sum at Top Gun
1:00 - Danny Woo Community Garden (Steve Badanes and Bob Santos)
2:00-3:00 - Immigration, trade, and other impacts of the Pacific Rim on Seattle (Eric
Hurlburt, Virginia Room at hotel)
6:00-8:00 - Reception at Seattle U. with U of I alumni/friends; see
Tsutakawa Ftn, St. Ignatius Chapel at 8:00.
Saturday May 24 - NEIGHBORHOODS, FOOD, SEATTLE CENTER
9:00 - Neighborhoods and parks: orientation at Gas Works Park (Gordon Walker) Eastlake, Fremont and Ballard. Northwest Cuisine?
12:30 - lunch in Ballard. [Discovery Park: walking tour of park, if there’s time]
3:00 - Northwest Folklife Festival and Seattle Center (1962 World’s Fair site)
Sunday May 25 - PARKS, PATHS; ETHNIC COMMUNITIES and ART
9:00 - Driving tour of Olmstead system (neighborhoods and parks) to U.W. with Susan
Boyle. U.W. campus (new architecture; Olmstead)
10:30 - Burke Museum: NW coast art, totem poles, ethnic communities. (Optional walking
tour of campus.)
12:30 - lunch (in U District )
2:00 - Leave Seattle by 2. Stop in Issaquah and look at the Talus development?). Picnic and discussion at Vantage.
Return to Moscow around 9:00 PM
