What is the evaluation schedule and important dates? |
Typically the evaluation period for a course begins 3 weeks before
the course ends. The evaluation period for full-semester courses ends on
the Sunday before the
semester's final exam week. The
Evaluation Schedule
lists each courses that will be evaluated and it provides Course and
Instructor information, the "Turn On Evaluation Date" and the "Turn
Off Evaluation Date". |

How does the
online SET system work? |
At the beginning of
each semester, course instructors have the opportunity to
design their evaluation forms to fit each course. Using a menu item,
course instructors may add and change items as many times as they wish until the first evaluation is completed.
Once a student has submitted an evaluation for a course, menu items cannot
be changed for that course. |
|
At a pre-specified time for each course, the online SET system is
turned on. Students receive one initial email when the evaluation
period for their courses is turned on and an additional email
each week until they have completed the evaluations, or the
evaluation period has ended. |
|
The evaluation period ends before final exams begin. After the
evaluation period is closed, students cannot complete an online course
evaluation. |

What happened to the old paper evaluations? |
In 2000, the faculty council formed a task force to investigate the
feasibility and worth of an online evaluation system. There were several
advantages to an online SET system, including: |
• |
The flexibility of the new menu-based form was only obtainable
through an online system. |
• |
Faculty and administrators can receive their results much faster
with an online system. |
• |
Student confidentiality can be controlled to a higher degree (no
handwriting analysis possible). |
• |
Data processing is more reliable. |
• |
The cost of processing paper forms is much higher than for the online
SET
system. |
|
With few exceptions, the online
SET system is the official system for
student evaluations. Paper evaluations are no longer being processed
centrally by the
University of Idaho. They might be used for workshops or other accelerated
courses. Colleges and professors may choose to utilize additional
evaluation tools. |

How do
I know that this process is confidential? |
When a student submits a course
evaluation, his/her identity is separated from the evaluation he/she
submits. A flag is entered into one file which contains the
student's identity. This tells the SET system whether a student has
completed the evaluation for a particular course. The content of the
evaluation is entered into a separate table that does not include
the student's identity. These two tables cannot be linked.
This process is completed automatically and is not subject to human
intervention. Also, in order to protect the
confidentiality of the students, only courses with enrollments of 5 or
more are reported. |

When must
I complete my evaluation form? |
For each course, instructors must add items to their evaluation form before the first
student completes the form. Evaluation periods typically open 3 weeks
before the last day of classes. Instructors are encouraged to check the
Evaluation Schedule to confirm the dates
of when their classes will be turned on and off. |

What if I do not add any additional items to my form? |
If you do not
add any items before the first student responds to
the course evaluation, the default "standard form" will be used. The
SET Standard Form consists of
nine questions. |
• |
What grade do you expect to receive? |
• |
What grade were you working to achieve? |
• |
How often did you attend class? |
• |
How often were you fully prepared for class? |
• |
How would you rate the quality of your effort in this course? |
• |
Overall, how would you rate the instructor's performance in teaching
this course? |
• |
Comment on the instructor's performance. What was most helpful? what
could be improved? |
