How can we design and build a
Sustainable Energy Laboratory and Transit Facility?
This hands-on
workshop is an interdisciplinary design charette facilitated by
Bruce Haglund, Eva Matsuzaki, Don Blackketter, and UI graduate students
from the School of Architecture. During the charette, we will
form four to six interdisciplinary teams to explore site and
building features for a proposed Sustainable Energy Lab and Transit
Facility on the UI campus. At the end of the workshop each team will
present their vision to the whole group. This workshop will provide
broad insights into the complexity of designing a truly sustainable
site and building that meets the research and operational
requirements of the university's clean vehicle and fuels program.
Participants' ideas will inform the design process as the basis for
a term-long architecture studio project.

Sustainable Energy Lab and Transit Facility Charette part 1.
University of Idaho President Timothy White has committed to
making the next building on campus green. What better way to
accomplish this feat than by building a green building that does
green things. The proposed building would be one that would
serve as a campus transit hub, service local transit vehicles,
and house transportation research activities. During this
session ideas about the building will be introduced and workshop
participants will form several small teams lead by architecture
graduate students. Then we will visit proposed sites with the
intention of looking at the context of the building as well as
visualizing the building’s active participation with the
environment. Schematic site plans will be developed. |

Sustainable Energy Lab and Transit Facility Charette part 2
This session will be devoted to the exploration and schematic
design of the building. We will introduce many of the factors
traditionally included with green buildings for discussion. The
purpose of this session is to include participants in a holistic
design process. Building schematics that demonstrate space
allocation, massing, siting, and green architecture features
will be developed. |
10:30 am - 12:00 noon |
Sustainable Energy Lab and Transit Facility Charette part 3
During this session each team of participants will present
their site and building schematics for critique and discussion
by the group as a whole. [10 minutes per group] |
