Facilitator:
William McLaughlin, Professor, Department of Conservation Social
Sciences, University of Idaho
How can we make transportation to
and within the University of Idaho campus more sustainable and
environmentally-friendly? What does a sustainable
transportation system mean for the university? What plans,
policies, and programs should be considered? We intend to learn about campus
transportation needs and how alternative modes of transportation
might be more effectively used on campus to meet the needs of
students, faculty, and staff. We also intend to develop
recommendations and actions that can be considered and implemented
by the campus community. Geoff Straw (Manager of UniTrans,
University of California, Davis student-run transit system) and Will
Toor (Boulder County, Colorado, Commissioner) will describe case
studies based on their experiences.

Facilitators:
Bruce
Haglund, Professor, Graduate Program in Architecture, University of
Idaho
Eva Matsuzaki, Principal, Matsuzaki Architects, Vancouver, British
Columbia
Don Blackketter, Professor and Chair, Department of Mechanical
Engineering, University of Idaho
How can we design and build a
Sustainable Energy Laboratory and Transit Facility?
This hands-on
workshop is an interdisciplinary design charette facilitated by
Bruce Haglund, Eva Matsuzaki, Don Blackketter, and UI graduate students
from the School of Architecture. During the charette, we will
form four to six interdisciplinary teams to explore site and
building features for a proposed Sustainable Energy Lab and Transit
Facility on the UI campus. At the end of the workshop each team will
present their vision to the whole group. This workshop will provide broad insights into the
complexity of designing a truly sustainable site and building that
meets the research and operational requirements of the university's
clean vehicle and fuels program.
Participants' ideas will inform the design process as the basis for
a term-long architecture studio project.

Don
Crawford, Director, Environmental Science Program, University of Idaho
How can we integrate sustainability
into our curriculum?
President Tim
White signed the Talloires Declaration on behalf of the University
of Idaho in March 2005. His signing of the declaration committed the
University of Idaho to developing a sustainability plan for the
university that includes integration of environmental sustainability
concepts into all aspects of the university's curriculum. This
workshop will examine the approaches used by other institutions of
higher education to successfully integrate sustainability into their
curricula. Workshop leaders will include University of Idaho faculty
involved in core curriculum development and teaching, University of
Idaho students, community educators, and outside experts who have
been directly involved in sustainability curriculum development at
other universities. The primary goal of the workshop will be to
develop of an initial approach and plan for integrating
sustainability into the University of Idaho curriculum. An outcome
of the workshop will be the presentation of this plan to the
University community for further discussion.

How can we use sustainability
concepts in land use and transportation decisions within the Moscow
community and region?
This workshop will focus how local decision makers
and agency staff can consider sustainability and environmental
issues as they assess one concept now being discussed in the region: the ring road. How can
this project meet the future
transportation needs of the region and what issues must local
decision makers consider as this project begins to take shape.
How does the concept of context sensitive solutions help support the
development of this concept? What information is needed to
support the discussion of this concept?

Jon
Van Gerpen, Professor and Chair, Department of Biological and
Agricultural Engineering, University of Idaho
How can we develop a biodiesel fuel
production facility on the Palouse?
With the cost of
gasoline on the rise in America drivers are looking to alternative
fuels for the future. One of the most promising fuels is biodiesel. The University of Idaho has been a leader in this
field for over a decade. This workshop will focus on the obstacles
surrounding the construction of a production plant, public awareness
and regional investment. The desired outcome would include the
formation of a task group to address obstacles to commercialization
of biodiesel and to facilitate local plant development, biodiesel
use in centrally-fueled fleets, and installation of a public fueling
station.
