THEATRE 101 –
INTRODUCTION TO THEATRE INSTRUCTOR:
Course Activity
Fee: The activity fee you were required to pay in order to enroll in this course includes a script for Welcome Home Jenny Sutter, the online course text, and all course paperwork. Course Objectives: The primary goal of this course is to introduce you to theatre as a field that offers a unique expression of human thought and feeling. We also hope to develop responsive and informed theatre audiences and advocates. We propose to accomplish this through: · Encouraging an understanding of the dramatic and theatrical impulse; · Examining dramatic literature, theatrical presentations, and production methodologies; · Developing an appreciation of how theatrical works of art reflect the societies/cultures that create them; We hope to instill in you an ability to understand, analyze, and discuss--both orally and in writing--works of dramatic literature in performance from various periods and genres; Finally, we wish to promote a comprehension of, and sensitivity to, the creative processes and aesthetic values inherent in theatrical works of art. Format: The course utilizes a combination of Lectures, Discussion, Group Work, & Student Projects and Presentations. On a few occasions, sections will meet in the Hartung or KIVA Theatre. These are either noted in the syllabus and/or will be announced by your section instructor. Grading and General
Course Policies:
**Required Labs are listed under the course calendar and require attendance of all students in the course. You will need to see the two of listed performances. All productions have several performances over the course of one or two weeks depending, so plan accordingly. You must stay for the entire show and you will also be asked to write a 3-page review of that production. Your instructor will decide what else you will need to do to prove that you attended. Play Reading
Deadlines: Play titles have been listed in the course calendar and can be found at Project Gutenberg, or other web sites the instructor has announced. These deadlines are typically accompanied by a quiz, so be prepared. The use of Spark notes or any other web-content-reduction service will not substitute for reading the play. Attendance Policy: A class roll will be taken daily. Students are allowed 3 absences during the semester. A total of twenty-five (25) points will be deducted from your cumulative score at the end of the semester for each additional unexcused absence. There will be No Exceptions. This course adopts the university policies governing ‘excused absences’. You are always responsible to make up any assigned work you miss due to absence for any reason. Late Assignments: All assignments are due on the date listed in this syllabus or as assigned by your instructor. 10 points will be deducted for every day late or past the deadline. Extra Credit: All students can usher once during the semester for the Hartung or KIVA performances and receive 25 extra credit points. If you fail to show up for your self-assigned performance, 50 points will be deducted from your total points. Students may also elect to see an additional production by the Theatre Arts Department or one produced in the region. Productions done by organizations other than the Theatre Arts Department require instructor approval first and are in addition to the required labs. A written response is also required. You can receive up to 50 extra points for this on a one-time basis. There will be no exceptions. Early Finals: There is a final during finals week. No early finals will be given without the permission of the Dean of the College of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences. Assignment Due
