Lab 3 Help/Hints

NOTE:  Both of these items are very important to successful completion of the Lab 3 problem set:

1)    The presence of an INFO directory in the arcmaps2 directory that you copied from the network, will prevent you from saving grid themes that you'll be creating in both the in-class exercise and your problem set (sections V and VII).  To alleviate this problem, create a working directory on your network drive and save all your work from this project (both the in-class exercise and the problem set) to that directory.  Alternatively, you can save the files to any directory on your network drive other than arcmap2, but beware that poor file management can lead to loss of data.

2)    ArcView 3.3 will not import the birdhex.dbf or the mamhex.dbf files correctly (it works with herphex.dbf, so ignore this when using herphex.dbf), resulting in a problem when trying to "Link" tables (section VI of the in-class exercise).  Consequently, when working on the problem set, you will need to import birdhex.txt or mamhex.txt, instead of their respective *.dbf versions.  Regardless of type, all tables are loaded similarly, but make sure you are using the *.txt files, NOT the *.dbf files for your problem set.  In order to find the *.txt files, make sure to select "Delimited text (*.txt)" in the "List Files of Type" dialog box of the "Add Table" window.  You then simply add birdhex.txt or mamhex.txt, as you did with herphex.dbf during the in-class exercise.  Linking and working with those tables will alleviate any problems.
