Brian's Background Brian is a food and bioprocessing engineer and associate professor of Biological and Agricultural Engineering at the University of Idaho. He has an integrated background in agricultural engineering, biosystems engineering, and chemical engineering. He has published in the areas of biomass conversion and bioconversion, bioproduction of secondary metabolites from fungal and plant cell cultures and teaches in the areas of transport processes and environment in biological systems, food and bio-based process engineering, engineering analysis and design, and agricultural process engineering at different level for biological engineering students and agricultural system management students. Brian's research interests are in the areas of biological/ biochemical/ thermal chemical processes for value-added products from biobased renewable resources, bioreactors for microbial and plan cell cultures, downstream separation and purification of bioproducts. Brian is a registered Professional Engineer of Chemical Engineering in the state of Idaho. Brian was born in Dolonnur, a historical town at the south entrence to the great Shilin Gol Prairie of Inner Mongolia, China. Brian got his BS and MS degrees in July 1983 and June 1986, respectively, from the Department of Chemical Engineering, Tianjin University, China's first higher education institution founded in 1895. After graduation, Brian worked as a Process Engineer/Associate Researcher at the Tianjin R&D Center for Petrochemical Technology, an engineering research institute for technology transfer under SinoPEC, the largest petrochemical company in China.
In 1993, Brian had the chance to study Biosusystem Engineering at the
University of Hawaii at Manoa
,
where Brian had enjoyed his three-year happy life being companied by the most beautiful
melody of Aloha
.
In August 1996, Brian transfered to
the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
for his Ph.D. education and graduated with the degree of Ph.D. in
Agricultural Engineering.
