COURSE DESCRIPTION:
The field of Genomics is expanding rapidly, and is currently a driving force behind many recent advances in the biological sciences. This course will examine Genomics in the context of fundamental questions in biology. We will focus on genomic techniques in sufficient detail to allow students to critically evaluate the scientific literature, analyze scientific results portrayed in the popular media, and discuss the many societal issues associated with genome science.
TEXTBOOK:
We will use
Genomes 3, by TA Brown. If you are
interested, you can check out the research interests of Professor Brown at his
website. This book provides an excellent review of the technical
aspects of genome science, and equips us to jump off into many interesting
topics, including forensics, pharmacogenomics, behavioral genetics, and cutting
edge research in everything from cancer and disease to evolutionary biology.
