How to get FE08:
1. Head south from summit camp, walking on 1968 ash. At the start, it helps to stay right on the rim to avoid arroyos. When the rim starts to climb significantly (about 1 km from camp), then drop down to prominent bench.
2. Walk past a giant boulder (about 4 m in diameter). If in doubt, look for the olivine crystals; this is the only boulder with olivine.
3. Continue on bench for another 2-3 km. The ash gets thinner and thinner. Go just a couple hundred meters below FE06.
4. Cross at least 2 painful a'a flows; one is very fresh (1958).
5. Up to your left, there is a prominent ' 82 spatter cone. Head up through levees and channels and skirt it to the left.
6. Walk down the floor of the graben that is floored by young lava.
7. Look for the wide pahoehoe flow with a "step" in it halfway down. Head across, down the step, and across just to the left of the older cinder cone.
8. Go down the brushy gully, then climb up the cindery ridge. Follow the ridge line down to the broad plane.
9. It is easiest to stay high on the fresh pahoehoe to get across to FE08.
