General Location and Strategy: SN 27 is placed on the back side dip slope of the sinuous ridge, meant to capture any uplift and tilting.
Field Notes: The site is on solid phh about 50m W of edge of youngest a'a' but above vegetated a'a'. It is about 100m north of the break in slope on the north side of the sinuous ridge. Best to get there by walking on top of the little ridge, avoiding brush in the gully.
2001: Started at 20:55 UTC on 1/6/01.
How to get there:
1. The trail down the caldera wall starts about 100 m south of SN05.
2. After the trail hits the bench just below the floor, go about 50
m, then cut straight downhill. Walk south through the brush to the prominent
tree.
3. Go about 200 m southeast past the tree, skirting the boundary between
the young lava an brush. Go until you see a short distance over a'a' to
a peninsula of vegetation. Stumble across the a'a' to the peninsula. Then
cross it and take shortest route over a'a' to vegetation patch on the other
side.
4. Follow burro paths to southeast across the prairie. Stick to within
100 m (mostly within 50 m) of nothern bounding fault of the graben..
5. After a few km, you climb up onto a fissure system that meets the
moat. (this is about 60-90 minutes from camp).
6. To get to SN07 go straight up left (north) to the skyline. To get
to 8, 20, 22, 27 take climbing traverse to active fumarole system. Do not
go straightaway to the prominent pass.
7. To get to 8, 20, and 27, there is a bridge across the big gaping
cracks in the sinuous ridge. The bridge is at 00 50' 04" S and 91 08' 24".
Picture is taken from the pass just above "the bridge".
