Problem Set 2
- Take the output of the Melts run we did on the primitive Mauna Kea basalt and plot it with all the natural samples on MgO variation diagrams. You will need to get it from the ftp site.
- Melts doesnt calculate trace elements. But it does calculate MgO, the fractionating assemblage, and F. Predict the concentrations of each of the trace elements and ratios from the first problem set as a function of MgO. One way to do this is do a simple regression of MgO vs. F, then reformulate the concentrations as a function of MgO and use the Rayleigh equation.
- Plot these on your diagrams from the first problem set.
- Perform a regression of each of the elements against MgO and devise formulae to calculate the concentrations of each element for every sample at MgO = 8%.
- Plot each element against Na8.0.
- Write a concise essay generalizing your findings.
- Rest. You deserve it.
