The Zulu Warriors

Every year, WSU sponsors a 100- km relay race.  Probably the most disreputable team of failed men (and an occasional talented person who has been forced to participate) is called the "Zulu Warriors".

The Zulu Warriors were begotten in 1999 as the "Topless Wonders", named after an infamous incident in Moscow involving people very much like us, except they were younger, female, and had principles.  Steve McGeehan was the founding captain and remains our spiritual leader, even though he blew out his knee in a tragic sky-surfing accident.  In 2000, we underwent a name change to the "Zulu Warriors", after a medallion that Greg Moeller found while on his annual Hunter-Thompsonesque pilgramage to New Orleans post-Mardi Gras.

Here's part of the 2002 Zulu team: Greg, ?, Tom, Paul,?, Jan, Scott, and ?. Matt
is running and Denny is taking the picture.

Matt passes a red Ford F-150; he is our stud, routinely drawing the hardest
leg, the one that climbs up Steptoe grade up out of the Snake River canyon.

Matt always questions why he is assigned this leg.

The most thrilling part of the race is the handoff. A simple slip up here can
cost the team several seconds. Matt's handoff to Tom was successful.

About 40 minutes later Tom hands off to Jan in bustling downtown Colton.

Note how Jan is running so fast that both feet are off the ground at once! And
they laughed at us when we offered to scholarship to "The Flying Dutchman".

The loneliness of the long distance runner. Jan right before handing off to
Denny and the batteries in the digital camera failed.

Denny apparently was the only one who bought into the "hey, let's all wear
Hawaiian shirts gag. Here he is on leg 2 passing off to Paul, who, as the senior
member of a very senior team, chooses to run down a drop bigger than
Angel Falls.

The highlight of the 2000 race was our starter, who forgot that Daylight
Savings Time had kicked in the night before, so instead of being a half-hour early,
jumped out of his car and started a half-hour late. The amazing thing is that he
passed some teams!

Tom provides refreshment for Paul.

Greg somehow always gets the river leg - must be lagging due to last week's
trip to New Orleans. Here he passes off to ?.

Steve drew the heroic Steptoe canyon leg in 2000. He has just passed a Honda.
