As of that date, I will also retire from the University of Idaho.
I have made this decision not because of job dissatifaction, but for
personal reasons, as my wife and I wish to fulfill some of our travel
dreams while we still have the time and the health to do so.
I have enjoyed my term as Director of the Environmental Science
Program tremendously and I thank all of you for your support,
dedication and hard work. Your efforts are what make the
Environmental Science Program the great success that it is today.
I will miss the challenges and the opportunities this job has
opened to me and the high quality faculty, staff and students
I have been fortunate to know and work with.
I will always value the many friendships made over the years.

Don has been a valued member of the UI community for almost 30
years and has seen 54 graduate students to completion. For the
last three years he has provided strong leadership to the
Environmental Science Program in its continued growth and
evolution as UI's oldest and largest university-wide program.
We wish him and his wife, Melinda, many happy travels in the
years to come and expect to get postcards from afar.
Maxine Dakins has agreed to serve as Interim Director of
Environmental Science for the upcoming year. She has been
with the program since 1996 at the Idaho Falls campus and
has been a member of the EnvS Core Faculty for the past five
years. Max will be moving to Moscow this summer to begin work
with Don before the transition. She is excited to undertake
this new role in Moscow.
We thank all of you for your support during this time of
transition. This is an exciting time at the University of
Idaho and an opportunity for the Environmental Science Program
to forge ahead with new energy and innovative ideas.
