Course Objectives
1. introduce
the science of geology
2. define
minerals and rocks and understand how they are formed and classified
3. introduce
the forces that shape the Earth
4. understand
how processes occurring on or near the Earth's surface affect us
5. examine the
relationship between geological resources and the environment
Tests & Grading
There will be three tests and a comprehensive final. Your grade will be based on the average
of these four, with: A = 90-100%,
B = 80-89%, C = 70-79%, D = 60-69%, and F = less than 60%. Lecture and lab are separate courses
with separate grades, but they should be taken in the same semester.
Makeup examinations will be given only for legitimate
reasons. Old exams are available
on my web site. Attendance will
not be taken. Remember, however,
that you (or your parents or the taxpayers) are paying for your education, and
the time you spend in class and studying is an investment in your future.
Field Trip
Field trips will be conducted the
week of September 19, and there will be no class or lab that week. You are expected to attend one of the
field trips. A sign-up sheet will
be placed outside my office door (309 McClure Hall) on September 6 so you can
select which trip you want to attend.
There are two trips per day, one leaving at 9:00 am and returning at
about 3:30 pm and the other leaving at 9:30 am and returning at about 4:00
pm. We meet and leave from the
west end of the Kibbie Dome parking lot.
Pack a lunch. Also, we will
be in the great outdoors, so a possibility of mud, dust, rain, snow, heat, and
cold exists; please dress appropriately.
Problems & Help
The TAs and I will be available during our office hours to
assist you with problems and answer your questions regarding this course. We are here to provide a service to
you; please take advantage of this.
Copies of class notes are available on my web page.
