Exploratory Sciences Career Major

This Major includes jobs like Earth Scientists, Geologists, Oceanographers, Astronomers, and Meteorologists.

Individuals who are successful in exploratory science careers tend to have some of the following dependable strengths:

Technologies

Using modern computers, machines, and equipment that supports the field of science.

Research
Planning and conducting basic scientific research.

Discovery
Using scientific exploration and investigation to find out what was not previously known.
Analysis
Learning to think critically and to base judgments on scientific evidence.

Measuring/Precision
Practicing accuracy in performing scientific operations and measurements.

For hands on experiences in the exploratory sciences career major complete the following activity:

Exploratory Experience

Ernest Rutherford, a British scientist, won the Nobel Prize in chemistry for his work in proving that an atom has a dense center called a nucleus. This activity is a macroscopic (large) procedure using large objects instead of the microscopic (small) procedure used by Rutherford. It does include the same scientific components that Rutherford used in his experiment. The components used in this activity are:

  • Research- Using the scientific method to prove or disprove a hypothesis.
  • Discovery- Using the scientific method and exploration to find out what was previously unknown.
  • Analysis- Thinking critically and basing judgements on the evidence from an experiment.

After you complete the activity please take a moment to fill out this evaluation of the activity.
